ADHD Assessments

What is ADHD?

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder or ADHD, is a neurodevelopmental condition that impacts a child's ability to focus, manage impulses, and regulate their activity levels.

There are three main types of ADHD:

  1. Inattentive Type: Difficulty focusing, staying organized, and following through on tasks.
  2. Hyperactive-Impulsive Type: Excessive fidgeting, talking, or being constantly on the move, along with impulsive decision-making.
  3. Combined Type: A mix of both inattentiveness and hyperactive-impulsive behaviors.

It's important to recognize that children with ADHD can have a range of strengths and positive traits, including creativity, high energy and enthusiasm, and deep concentration on things they're interested in. With proper support and strategies, many kids with ADHD can feel empowered and thrive in a supportive environment.

At what age can my child receive an ADHD diagnosis?

While parents and caregivers may start noticing signs early in their child's development, a formal diagnosis is typically made after 6 years of age. By this age, ADHD symptoms become more apparent as the demands for attention, focus, and behavioral regulation increase.

What is the process of an ADHD assessment?

Our ADHD assessments are thorough, individualized, and completed as part of  a comprehensive psychoeducational assessment. Here’s an overview of what you can expect:

  • Initial consultation call to better understand the needs of the child and plan for the assessment.
  • Intake and diagnostic interview with the family to gather detailed background information, as well as an understanding of strengths and areas of challenge associated with ADHD.
  • Review of relevant records (e.g., medical, healthcare, school reports, past assessments).
  • Formal testing and evaluation based on standardized cognitive and learning measures (e.g., IQ, memory, attention), as well as questionnaires examining ADHD symptoms and other behaviors across settings.
  • Further interviewing with professionals involved in the child's care (e.g., teachers, healthcare providers, etc.).
  • Feedback session with the family to share the results of the assessment, recommendations, the plan for next steps, and answer any questions.
  • Written report is provided to the family, which includes the results of the assessment, any diagnoses, as well as recommendations and next steps.

**please note some sessions are conducted virtually (e.g., intake interviews and feedback), while all testing sessions are completed in-person with the child/youth.

What are the fees for an ADHD assessment?

The fee for an assessment is billed at the psychologist's hourly rate ($275) and depends on the nature and complexity of the presenting concerns. A breakdown of fees will be discussed in advance. Please contact the clinic for more information.
